Speech Therapists and What They Do

Stuttering is the most widespread and obvious speech disorder that is often caused by anxiety while other speech disorders may come as a result of hearing loss, stroke, cerebral palsy, mental disability, or brain injury.

Speech therapists set up programs that include speech exercises to reduce speech disability and will enlist the aid of a psychologist or psychiatrist if needed.

They keep careful records of the evaluation and progress of patients and often develop and implement individualized treatment programs based on the inputs of physicians, psychiatric social workers, and psychologists.

Since speech disorders are usually related to neurological, psychological, and physical conditions, speech therapists are trained to work with a team that may include other healthcare specialists such as a neurologist and psychiatrist.

An important part of a speech therapist's work is providing counseling and support to individuals with speech disorders and their families and helping them cope with the stress associated with these problems.
